Bits of Borno USAID OTI/Nigeria Dec 2016 from Creative on Vimeo.

Boko Haram traces it roots to the city of Maiduguri, the capital of the Nigerian state of Borno. These violent extremists have committed (and continue to commit) some of their most horrendous acts of terror in and around the city.

Fati Abubakar wants people to see a different perspective of her hometown of more than 1.5 million. The photographer started "Bits of Borno" on Facebook and Instagram to showcase the faces, people and sights. She feels her work counters the violent extremist message of Boko Haram.

The U.S. Agency for International Development's Office of Transition Initiatives is supporting a traveling show of Fati Abubakar's photos through its North East Regional Initiative, which is implemented by Creative Associates International.
